After about 2-3 hours I poured the black over so as to not drown the colours out. There are 3 of these and I love them all. As you say I don't think that I can cut them up and will need to put some thought into how I will build them up! They are 50cm x 152cm so the three together as panels could really work!

Weekend Dyeing Session

I spent Sunday dyeing 21 metres of fabric to repleniswh my supply. The box below is my procion dyes sitting patiently to be washed out. They are still waiting, except for the glad-wrapped peices in the middle...

This is the results of the glad-wrapped peices, hanging out to dry - I think they look interesting!
and even more interesting close up!Lesson for the day... These juice container cannot withstand boiling water. Beleive it or not both containers were the same size, however boiling water was poured into the one on hte right and it quickly xhrunk to this size.

This is the iron oxide dyeing in progress. These buckets each contain a different oxide (the ones used to colour concrete and mortar (for tiling etc)

Keeping this short in case I lose it again...

I had a productive day today. I have pics to post and will give details then, but briefly this is what I achieved:

  • started the iron oxide dyeing from the Prairie Fibres class
  • a one piece doll for the Joggles 3D Doll construction class
  • laundry; and
  • cooked meals to 3 nights
  • oh and I did sleep in a little (8.30) and checked my favourite blogs, email and so on too!

What a great weekend!!

My weekend away with the girls was great. There were 65 of us in total aged between 22 and 80 (ish). I was amazed that a group of such varied ages could get along so well. There were no whingers, no problems, just a great group of people all out for a fun weekend. Of the 65 I knew only 3 at the beginning but got along well with everybody - just don't ask me to give names cause I don't remember them all!!!

Anyway having spent the weekend away and most of last week locked in a room training, I feel like I've lost touch with my textiles and blogger friends. I turned on the computer when I got home to find 218 new items in my bloglines notifier!!!

This week I've got to try and catch up on the classes that I've been doing....
  • I've missed a week of my rust and clay dyeing class because I'm still waiting on my order of clays and stuff to arrive. I can however move onto the next class as I have all the ingredients for that (iron oxides)
  • I'm up to date with the fabric collage class. The next lesson should go online tonight (Aus time) and so I'll be able to give that a go this weekend
  • The 3-D dolls class needs some work though. Each lesson builds on the previous so I really need to get in and work on that one.

Luckily I have a 3 day weekend coming up - although I've already cut it short by offering to do the kitchen shift on Saturday pm and was booked to do the other job on Friday. I'm gonna try to combine the two so I can keep Friday and Sunday free. I get greedy about my weekends. As much as I enjoyed my weekend away, I do feel like I've lost a weekend. It's not like I have a time frame it's just that I want time to create. Speaking of which - best get back to work so I can earn the money to buy things to create with and to earn the time in which to create!!!!

Weekly update

I've been fighting to get on the computer this week (and weekend). B is selling his car so has been spending hours with photos, typing descriptions etc etc etc. This is not the only computer in the house, but it is the fastest and the one with my links and the one with wireless (so you can watch telly at the same time).

I have achieved a few things this week.
  • I finished the scarves that I dyed on Friday - I'm really pleased and will post ics when I have some more allocated puter time.
  • I've almost finished the top of a fused quilt/wallhanging that I've started. I'm working from a pattern with a new fuse (the Misty Fuse I was telling you about) just to try it all out. So far I'm really loving Misty Fuse!!
  • I started my first fabric journal. I've created the pages (blank) and covers (also blank) and will embellish them before I assemble the book. They're all sitting there begging to be stitched into!
  • I've finished a sashiko sampler that I bought in January and had done about 2 rows of. I packed it with me and worked on it on the train as I went to work. This week I've been on the train almost every day so far, so 5 trips, 1 hour each and the sample is done (except neatening up the back - figured I'd leave that for smooth ground!)

This weekend I'm heading out to play but no textiles will be achieved. A couple of the girls from work go on an annual girls weekend (approximately 60 girls) and I was invited along. I'm looking forward to it because my social life is relatively non-existent. So no more posts likely until Monday at least (and beyond because I'll not have anything to show).

Call for help - completely off topic!!

My Mum is off to a cocktail party this weekend. The theme... "Rocky Horror Picture Show". Can anybody out there help us with ideas (relatively simple as access to resources is limited)????? All input would be greatly appreciated.

The results of yesterday's dyeing

Jen (Jen's Footsteps) asked me about the dyeing that I was doing yesterday. I was testing out masking tape a resist (that's what the white lines that you saw were). I have done batik with wax but just wanted to see if I could get a similar effect (that was quicker). The results are not quite what I expected but interesting nonetheless.

It seems that it's not quite strong enough to keep the dye out, but the effects that it did create were quite interestin anyway. I just placed the tape directly onto the silk scarves and sprayed dye over them. I used procion dyes in turquoise, purple and jade. The scarves had been soaked in a soda ash/salt mixture and the dyes were mixed with paint powder (I think that because I used silk, and paint powder that I could have got away without soaking in soda ash - that's what happens when you make it up as you go along - no matter). The silk was dry when I applied the dyes.
Basically where the tape was, there are some great fuzzy lines happening. I guess this is because the fabric was dry - if it had been wet it would have seeped straight under. The areas where the silk was really saturated with dye the lines are really faint. I was having problems with the spray bottles so there are a few of these areas.
I havent' washed these yet so they may lighten a little. I'm also not sure if I'm going to overdye them - which was the original plan when I thought that the tape would leave white areas (overdye to fill the white with another colour).

Today I had a playday with the girls. We explored burning and whilst some of us had done most of it before, I think we all discovered something new. Somehow with the six of us there, the ideas grew - a real think tank. What if you... but then you'd have to... let's see if.... how about.... One thing that we were particulary impressed with was a prouct called Shrink-it. Initially we couldn't think of any real purpose for it as you can't stitch into it after it's shrunk, however Pam Sussman's Fabric Journals book has pictures of clear and stamped acrylic buttons and that's where the inspiration started. After a few samples with stamps, somebody suggested writing little phrases or messages (in reverse of course!) and then shrinking it. This is what we came up with.

As you can see these are tiny - so small this is the clearest picture I could get - but I can see many uses for these in my yet to be created fabric journals (buttons, charms, closings etc). Of course there is more sampling to be done and so sometime in the future I'll have to mosey on over to The Thread Studio to order some.

No more pics from today - we just did sampling, but as I put some of the techniques into practice I will point them out.

Take a tour of my temporary studio....

Our house is a rental and so I need to be particularly careful not to mark floors, benches and walls. I have a space for my sewing machine (in the office) but dyeing is another matter. The laundry is small and to get out of it, you need to walk over carpet - not a good idea with dyes. So here is my solution. Move the car out of the garage and hey presto!!! Studio!!!

There's also the courtyard but it was a bit windy today....
But it was good for ironing the devore that I was working on - fresh air and didn't set the smoke alarms off!! MAybe I should iron out here more often - far more pleasant!!

Textile Fibre forum magazine arrived today so I off to read it.

A sneak peek!!

This is the picture I was trying to upload yesterday - of my rust sandwich rusting away nicely...

And here is a sneak peek at the rusted fabrics - still wet but beautifully coloured. I must admit that there appears to be a few more things going here in addition to the rust.
The bottom fabric was hand dyed flanelette (navy blue), the top was undyed calico (muslin). This picture shows the top fabric (undyed calico/muslin) but it has taken up the colour from the bottom fabric as well as the rust. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished but I'm liking it so far. Next step is to let it sit for another 24 hours and wash gently.

Oh and check out this package - today's mail!! It's a bundle of threads I bought on eBay that were sent from India. Instead of the familiar paper postpac, this was wrapped in bubble wrap and then covered with a calico/muslin bag that was hand-stitched closed! Very ingeniuos - I've kept the bag and might use it in a piece of artwork sometime.

Patience is definitely not my strongest point.

Ask anyone in my family and they'll tell you!! Never tell me a secret, I'll burst wanting to tell... and you should see me with gifts - giving them I mean. 9 times out of 10 I've told the recipient what it is before they've opened it.

Anyway, that's off topic. I started my rust dyeing today between work stints. First step was to turn the nice shiny bits of metal into rusty objects. This happened a lot quicker that I'd expected (using a mixture of bleach and vinegar - outside with lots of fresh air) - see my bucket of rust - it's even murkier now.
The sandwich (plastic wrap, fabric, rusted metals, more fabric and more plastic wrap) with vinegar throughout is now sitting there rusting away nicely. I have a picture but blogger is not cooperating so you'll just have to imagine. You can see the rust marks coming through and I just want to open it up and peek, however I have to wait the full 24 hours.

I did learn one thing... which had I thought about it, I knew already, however... I took the metal pieces straight from the rusty solution (remember bleach and vinegar), thinking that that would be best 'cause it's all nice and rusty... WRONG!!! remember BLEACH!! Of course this really mattered as one of the pieces of fabric I was using was a navy blue flannelette that I'd dyed last year (for a discharge project of all things!) and it went that nice pinky orange colour straight away. SOOOO I took the metal bits off and let them dry out and started again.

Now I'm waiting waiting waiting..... (and I do wish blogger would lift it's game so I can show you the picks)

The mailman was good to me again today!!!!

I've been waiting patiently (or not so - running home and checking the mailbox each day) for these books that I ordered from Amazon right back at the beginning of January and they finally arrived today!!!! The nice courier man even left the box under the mat in a semi-hiding kind of way which meant that I didn't have to wait till tomorrow for them to be delivered - Yay!

Now I can really join in with the others over at Fabric Art Journals and at Flickr Fabric Artjournals

I'm off to bed now to read my new books... Nighty night!!

Sunrise and Mail

B took this sunrise photo after taking me to the station to catch the 6am train yesterday. I spent the first 15 minutes of the trip admiring it and wishing I had a camera to capture it and he was at home taking pics - what a gem!!!

And this is what the mailman brought me today. I'm eagerly waiting on a few items (Mum, if you're reading this, Yes they are essential and I do need them and they were a bargain and I can afford them!!). This package is from Esterita Austin is a product called Misty fuse, which is like vliesofix, wonder under, heat'n'bond etc, but is suitable for really fine fabrics like sheers. This should help with things like my spinifex piece where the (horrible) heat'n'bond went straight throught the fabrics. The iron is to help with fusing. I couldn't find one in Australia so will now have to get a converter thingamy to make it work with our power system. No doubt one will turn up now that I've got one (and no I don't want to know about it if you do know where I could have got it in Oz!!)

This is a recent eBay purchase (Mum, again really cheap!!) following on from my recent daily drawings. I haven't done too many more but will have to so that I can use my new pencils. I knew that once I called them daily drawings that I would jinx myself. Never mind, I'll keep trying

Bloglines

This weekend I discovered Boglines. It watches all of my favourite blogs and lets me know when one of them has been updated. This has meant a great time saving for me, as instead of scrolling through everybodies blogs in search of new posts, I simply click onto bloglines and read those that do. Oh and the best part... it's free!!

Needlefelting update

I've started stitching on needlefelting 1. I'm using random uneven cross stitches. I promise you it looks better in real life - this picture makes it look hideous, but I wanted to show that I had acheived something today (It's really a mix of russet reds, ochres, rusts and browns with a sprinkling of brighter reds throughout.) I'll take another pic tomorrow in daylight to get a better look at the colours and stitching. The background is just scrap and will be cut off and covered up when I'm finished so please ignore that too. Right now I'm off to bed as it's late.

Needlefelting

Note to self... carrying ink pens in one's handbag can end in disaster. I discovered this as I sat down for breakfast at a cafe this monrning. As I put my handbag down the camera (also inside the bag) landed on the black ink pen, smashing it (and I mean smashing) with ink pouring all onver my bag, and its contents!! Luckily the mobile was in a side pocket and the camera was only inked on one end without getting into the works. As for the handbag, there jury is still out. It's spent the day soaking in Nappy San and the outside is looking OK, but I have a feeling that the lining will never be the same.

I've been doing some more needle felting today - I've taken pictures but blogger won't upload them today so mosey on over to Flickr to check them out. There's no stitching on them yet, well some, but for some reason the needle keeps glugging up (I think because I used that horrible heat'n'bond to fuse it to the background first), so I'm going to hand stitch them. This time instead of felting flat onto commercial felt, I felted the wool, then applied it to the commercial felt with ridges and bumps in it.

And I got a pressie from my Grandma in the mail yesterday. An address book featuring original dolls by Chris Boston. You can see some of her work here.

Daily Sketches

Sunday evening as I was sitting in front of the telly after dinner I decided to pick up the sketchbook and draw (it helped that is was sitting on the floor beside me as I'd taken it out with me the day before). I drew what was on the coffee table in front of me and it turned out OK!! So each evening this week I have continued to draw something. I don't put a lot of thought into what, I just assemble a few objects and draw. These are this weeks drawings so far....

Sunday: My pencil case

Monday's warm ups (blind contours)

Monday's bottle of wine...

Tuesday: My feet

The other option was the remotes but I'm not ready to attempt them yet - too boring anyway! Will have to come up with something else for tonights sketch...
